The line from Rosslaire to Waterford currently has only 1 train a day in each direction and is currently used by only 25 passengers a day, and has almost no freight business to provide a reason for keeping it open. Although the low usage could be down to the lack of trains and business and community leaders in the area have been campaigning for an enhanced timetable to boost the lines fortune.
The National Transport Authority (NTA) are meeting today to decide the fate of the line, and one suggestion that has been put forward instead of the closure that is wanted by Iarnrod Eireann, is a community rail partnership based on the UK model, where IE continues to run the trains, but the local communities provide promotion and marketing.
The baord meeting today is required as IE can't go ahead and close the line without the goahead from the NTA.
