Normal service resumes at Scunthorpe

Normal rail services in and out of Scunthorpe resume on Monday 7th September, following the completion of a 10-million project at Medge Hall which has meant that for the past 11 weeks freight trains to and from the Corus steelworks in Scunthorpe have had to be diverted by Brigg. 10million pounds have been spent during the works to tackle subsidence at Medge Hall and over 1000 concrete piles have been buried to create a 500m long reinforced concrete platform to carry the railway over the affected area.

It has been bad news for passengers as they have been ferried by fleets of buses to and from stops on the main Cleethorpes to Doncaster line.

Richard Lungmuss, the route director for Network Rail, said: "I want to thank passengers and our freight customers for their patience during these essential works.

"The ground conditions on parts of this route are difficult but these works will give us a more robust railway which will allow passenger services to travel at full speed for the first time in several years.

"This line also carries a significant amount of the UK's rail freight and this work will help to make sure that we can continue to handle that volume on the railway and in doing so keep lorries off the roads."
