Rush hour collision on the tube averted

Tube Train

On Wednesday 8th September at 8.18am a Hammersmith and City line train on the London Underground
left Plaistow staion in East London heading west towards Hammersmith and due to a signal failure was incorrectly routed onto the EastBound tracks. Fortunately the driver immediately noticed the error and stopped the train. There wasn't any real danger to the passengers as fortunately the nearest eastbound train was a kilometer away and was immediately stopped at a red signal. The train then reversed back into Plaistow station and the passengers got off.

This however meant that services were suspended on the District and Hammersmith and City lines for almost 6 hours while an investigation took place. Speaking from experience as I was trying to make my way into the city along the District Line that part of East London was thrown into chaos as people used alternative means of transport to get into work.

This incident came the day after the strike in which the unions campaigned against job cuts as they would compromise safety, and as this happened 12 hours after the end of the strike it could be argued that striking put passenger lives in more danger.
