The National Transport authority have decided to suspend services on the Waterford to Rosslaire line this month, with travel in the area being enhanced by 80 new bus trips being introduced by Bus Eireann.
The reason for the closure comes at it was revealed that the line is subsidised with almost €2million a year, yet with 50 passengers a day it brings in barely €50,000 a year.
The closure has been criticised by the Wexford based Save the Rail group, as they have already met one organisation who wish to run trains over the route in a model similar to the UK, and they are planning to meet other interested parties in the weeks ahead. They feel the process used to close the line was flawed, as it appeared to them that in running only 2 trains a day at the times when passengers didn't want to use them, allowed the decision to be engineered to save IE money.
