With Irish Railways trimming its locomotive fleet and selling off its MK3 coaches scenes like the ones below will soon be disappearing for good.
Wexford is always a great place to stop to kill time when heading south towards Rosslare and the ferry back to the UK, there are lots of excellent places to eat, and if it’s a nice day there is always the option of sitting down on Commercial Quay, by the harbour bridge and watching the trains go by. It is enough to give the UK Health and Safety Executive a fit, as the trains run along the street, with nothing in the way of fencing to stop people not noticing a great lump of locomotive moving along the tracks and accidently walking blindly into it. As far as I am aware no-one has done this recently, so it looks like all the Irish jokes that were told in clubs up and down the length of the UK were all false. The trains do drive at walking pace and there does seem to be quite a few people hanging out of door windows enjoying the experience.
In fact the only problem is the lack of trains to watch, the last visit there were only 2 while I was there, and I had all afternoon to spend. My suggestion would be to make the station your first stop its at the end of Commercial Quay to check the timetable boards to find out what time the trains will pass, and if you walk along the quay towards Rosslare there is a quaint little harbour bridge that the trains have to cross and it makes a great place to take photographs.
